"Neshanic Firemen Mark 25th Year" Minimize
From: Somerset Messenger

A quarter century of memories were reviewed Saturday at the 25th anniversary party of the Neshanic Volunteer Fire Company in the firehall here. Highlight of the event was the presentation of 25-year service pins to John M. Agens and John R. Gaddis, who have been active members since the organization of the company. The pins were presented by John OBrien, president of the company.

George H. Van Derveer served as master of ceremonies and extended appreciation to the ladies auxiliary for the help it has given through the years, and for preparing and serving the anniversary dinner.

Varian Quick, fire chief, gave a reading on the first donation received from the auxiliary and also gave a colorful and interesting reading concerning the arrival of the first fire engine.

The minutes of the first meeting, held October 3, 1927, and of the meeting at which the bylaws were adopted, march 7, 1928, were read by Hillsborough Township Committeeman David W. Amerman, who served as first secretary of the company. The minutes of the first auxiliary meeting, October 27, 1927, were read by Mrs. Hilda Kinney, as Mrs. Samuel Hall, Woodbridge, first auxiliary secretary, was unable to attend the party.

Ed Quick, Ringoes fire chief, was guest speaker and reviewed the work of the fire company and the benefit the communities derive from the volunteer fire organizations. Mr. Quick is a past president of the Hunterdon County Firemens Association.

A prayer in memory of deceased members of the company was offered by the Rev. George Scholten, pastor of the Neshanic Reformed Church, who also gave the opening devotions.

Music was furnished by Woodrow Rotz and specialty dances were given by Shirley Ann Rotz. More than 150 persons attended the dinner.

The first meeting of the company 25 years ago was held in the K of P Hall, Neshanic Station. A firehall was built at the present location two years later and about four years after that an addition was constructed, bringing the building up to its present size.

The company answered its first alarm on April 27, 1929, at the Bergen Farm here. The fire company serves a portion of Hillsborough, Branchburg, and Readington Township.

The committee in charge of the anniversary celebration included: Larry Lee, chairman, Irving Covert and Max Gwin.
